Pencil on white wove paper, 113 x 189 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The rough nature of this landscape sketch makes the location difficult to identify but the shallow dome and adjacent twin towers visible in the centre suggest that this is a distant view of Ariccia with the Church of Santa Maria dell’Assunzione, looking back from the road towards Genzano and Lake Nemi. Similar compositions can be found on folios 87 and 87 verso (D15461 and D15462; Turner Bequest CLXXXII 86 and 86a). For a general discussion of Ariccia see folio 83 verso (D15454; Turner Bequest CLXXXII 82a).
