Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Hill describes this as Turner’s first drawing made on his journey from Paris to Lyon, done ‘while stopping to change horses or have lunch’.1 The journey of some forty miles from the capital would have taken the equivalent of a morning. Hill notes the classical symmetry of this sketch, the landscape having perhaps reminded Turner of pictures by Claude Lorrain.
