Finberg noted the inscription on the verso of this leaf (D40784), which he read as referring to ‘the Castle of Küssenberg, near Schaffhausen’ – actually Schloss Küssaberg, near Lauchringen, for which see folio 17 verso of this sketchbook (D04672). Finberg’s comment has led to an assumption that the interior itself belonged to the castle, although he did not say so precisely and the castle was in fact already a ruin. Even if it were not, one might wonder how Turner would have gained access to it, and the scene is more probably the kitchen of some inn or eating house.
