The fisherman does not seem particularly ‘grotesque’. See Introduction to the sketchbook for Turner’s travels in North Wales and Cheshire in 1808, and his fondness for fishing. For sketches of fishing in the River Dee at Corwen see folio 29 verso (D06893; Turner Bequest CIV 28a).
