For Turner’s trip into North Wales from Tabley in 1808, see Introduction to the sketchbook. The drawing is sandwiched between views of the road between Corwen and Ty-Nant near Glyn Diffwys and here a coach and party of travellers have stopped near Pont-y-Glyn. The size of the vehicle and its halt at this beauty spot suggests a private party, which would reinforce the suggestion made in the Introduction to the sketchbook that Turner was accompanying a patron, perhaps Sir Richard Colt Hoare or Sir John Leicester between their respective homes at near Bala and at Tabley.
