For Turner’s trip to North Wales from Tabley in 1808, see Introduction to the sketchbook. Previous leaves have sketches of the road west of Corwen (see notes to folio 11, D06871; Turner Bequest CIV 10).
As noted in the Introduction, Turner’s excursion into Wales may have been made with or at the behest of Sir Richard Colt Hoare, who bought pictures of picturesque mills at Corwen and Llangollen, one based on his own on-the-spot sketch, by Turner’s friend Augustus Callcott in 1808. Turner had drawn mills around Llangollen on his Welsh tour in 1794. See also folios 22 and 27 (D06883, D06888; Turner Bequest CIV 21, 26).
