Drawn with the sketchbook inverted, this is one of three versions of this subject in the sketchbook and the closest to the picture (Tate N01857) which, according to Butlin and Joll, is a candidate for a ‘Sketch of Cows, &c’ exhibited at Turner’s Gallery in 1809.1 See catalogue note to folio 47 verso (D06918; Turner Bequest CIV 46a) for the drawings and fresh evidence that the picture was hanging at Tabley in 1809.
