The three sketches on this page probably depict the tower and spire of the Town Hall in Berwick-upon-Tweed which was built in 1761, and features in the background of Turner’s view of the town for an illustration to volume 12 of Walter Scott’s Poetical Works: Berwick-upon-Tweed circa 1832 (watercolour, location unknown).1 The artist made a study of the tower in the Berwick sketchbook (Tate D25658; Turner Bequest CCLXV 9a).
