J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

With the sketchbook turned to the right is an inscription by Turner in pencil which Finberg has read as ‘8 Princes St. Borough | Miss Gregory’.1 Rather than referring to Borough in London (where there is no Prince’s Street), this inscription probably refers to Princes Street in Edinburgh, though it is not known who Miss Gregory was. Another address is noted in the book, that of the publisher Robert Cadell who had commissioned Turner’s visit to Scotland to collect material to illustrate Sir Walter Scott’s Poetry (folio 8 verso; D25656), so perhaps Turner copied down Miss Gregory’s address at the same time. Another address, apparently unconnected, is noted on folio 64 (D25758).
