With the sketchbook turned to the left is a view of Innerwick Castle from the north. The castle ruins stand at the top of a deep glen overlooking Thornton Burn, East Lothian. There is a similar view in the Abbotsford sketchbook (Tate D25977; Turner Bequest CCLXVII 28a) in which he took a number of views (Tate D25945, D25978, D25979, D25988, D26017; Turner Bequest CCLXVII 10a, 29, 29a, 36, 53). Turner also made further sketches of Innerwick on folios 23, 24, 33 and 60 of the current sketchbook (D25682, D25684, D25701, D25750).
Turner visited Innerwick Castle on 11 or 12 August 1831 on his way from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Edinburgh (see D25977; CCLXVII 28a for more information).
