From across the River Tees to the west, is the Durham town of Barnard Castle, here dominated by the cylindrical tower and remains of the Great Hall of the castle. The tower of St Mary’s Church is also identifiable behind other buildings at the right of the sketch.
From here Turner walked north along the river to make another sketch of the castle on folio 33 (D25825). See folio 32 (D25823) for more information and references to further views of the castle.
