With the sketchbook turned to the left are three sketches of Lochmaben Castle. The sketches at the top and in the middle of the page show the remains of walls with archways in them that spanned the castle’s ‘canal’ or moat. In the top sketch a second archway can be seen through the first. The second sketch carries an inscription that may read ‘gallows’ or perhaps ‘gatehouse’, although the sketch apparently depicts neither. There are further sketches of the castle from close quarters on folio 59 verso (D25878).
At the bottom of the page is a sketch of the castle ruins from across Castle Loch to the east. There are further sketches from a similar viewpoint on folios 58, 58 verso and 59 (D25875–D5877).
For further information about Lochmaben see folio 57 verso (D25874).
