The first of Turner’s sketches of Hermitage Castle is this view from the south-east with the Hermitage Water to the left and Hermitage Hill in the background. The majority of Turner’s sketches of the castle were from the south-east, and can be found on folios 64, 64 verso, 65, 66 and 66 verso (D25887, D25888, D25889, D25891, D25892). Other views appear on some of these pages and on 65 verso and 67 (D25893, D25890), which formed the basis of Turner’s illustration of Hermitage Castle circa 1832 (watercolour, private collection) for Sir Walter Scott’s Poetical Works.1
