This view of Hailes Castle was made from across the River Tyne to the north-east about 100 metres from the castle by Hailes Mill, which is visible at the bottom right of the sketch. A crossing near the mill provided Turner with access to the other side of the castle (folio 35 verso; D25987; CCLXVII 35a). The view is similar to the sketch on folio 44 verso (D26001; CCLXVII 44a) and there is another view from the north-east on folio 24 verso (D25971; CCLXVII 24a).
