As the inscription at the bottom of the first drawing on this page indicates, this sketch was made from the ‘road’ to Philiphaugh to the north-east of Newark Castle, which is shown at the centre of this sketch on the bank of the Yarrow Water. Below the castle, further down the bank, is Newark Mill (see folio 78 verso, D26069; CCLXVII 80a). Turner made this sketch on his return journey from Newark Castle after views on folios 77 verso and 77 (D26067 and D26066; CCLXVII 79a and 79; see 77 for details).
The sketch on the lower half of the page shows a narrow bridge over a gorge or river with hills in the background, and was probably made nearby to the above sketch; perhaps just a little further along the road with General’s Bridge near Bowhill.
