With the sketchbook turned to the left are various studies of Newark Castle. Starting out at the top of the page, there are close-up profiles of the north front and west sides of the castle. The inscription written above (‘1472’) corresponds with the date the castle was given to Margaret of Denmark, whose royal coat of arms is on the west gable. Turner made similar studies of the south and east sides of the castle on folio 79 (D26070; CCLXVII 81).
Other views of the castle on this page are from the north-west (second sketch down) and north (middle sketch). At the bottom of the page is a landscape sketch that probably shows the view west from the castle along the valley of the Yarrow Water.
For more information on Turner’s visit to Newark, see folio 77 (D26066; CCLXVII 79).
