As Gerald Finley has pointed out, this sketch (made with the book inverted) shows Robert Cadell sitting on a tree trunk in front of Newark Castle, waiting for the artist to finish making sketches.1 The view is from the Yarrow Water’s edge just to the north-east of the castle near Newark Mill, which is shown behind Cadell to the left.
