With the sketchbook turned to the left are three views of Newark Castle. The top half of the page contains a view made from the Yarrow Water to the south-east of the castle (there is another view from the south-east on folio 79 verso; D26671; CCLXVII 81a). Beneath this are close-up profile views of the castle from the south and east, labelled ‘SE’. Turner’s methodical approach to recording the castle is demonstrated by the fact that he recorded the north and west profiles on folio 78 (D26088; CCLXVII 80).
For more information on Turner’s visit to and depictions of Newark, see folio 77 (D26066; CCLXVII 79).
