From high up the river bank just a few hundred metres to the east of Ashestiel, Turner sketched this view looking west along the River Tweed. Robert Cadell recalls Turner stopping the carriage to make the sketch (see folio 86; D26084; CCLXVII 88). With the river bank rising up on the left the house is hidden from view. Turner, however, made a sketch of Ashestiel at the bottom left of this page, showing its east side.
Turner was to stop the carriage again five minutes later to make another sketch from lower down the river bank near a ford (see folio 84 verso; D26081; CCLXVII 86a). For further information on Turner’s sketches of Ashestiel see folio 88 (D26088; CCLXVII 90).
