For Turner’s visit to the Ribble Valley in 1808 see Introduction to the sketchbook. By ‘Ribblesdale Leap’ he could mean one of the salmon leaps or waterfalls on the river rather than a specific place. Sir John Leicester, with whom Turner stayed at Tabley in 1808 (see Introduction) owned fishing rights at Ribchester on the Ribble.
