The sketch across the centre of this page is identifiable from a similar sketch on folio 4 verso (D26626) as the view south down Loch Goil with Carrick Castle on the right shore; the most distinctive feature being the mountain to the right of the castle.
The sketch at the top of the page is unlikely to be of Loch Goil, as there appears to be an island at the left of the sketch, and there are no islands in Loch Goil. Instead this may be a view of the east end of Loch Katrine with Ellen’s Island (Eilean Molach), or the nearby peninsular and Ben A’an beyond. A sketch on folio 11 verso (D26640), drawn with the sketchbook inverted and inscribed ‘kat’, shows this view. For more information on Turner’s sketch of Loch Katrine, see Tate D26528 (Turner Bequest CCLXX 47).
