Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
David Wallace-Hadrill and Janet Carolan have identified this sketch, inscribed ‘Lo’, as likely to be of the ‘Arrochar Alps’ as seen from Inversnaid across Loch Lomond.1 The so-called ‘Arrochar Alps’ are the range of mountains to the west of Loch Lomond at the heads of Loch Goil and Loch Fyne. From Turner’s viewpoint the most prominent peaks are Ben Vane and Beinne Ime, respectively from the right and left of Turner’s inscription ‘Lo’.
There are two further sketches of the view from Inversnaid on folio 13 of this sketchbook (D26643), and Turner made sketches of Inversnaid in the Stirling and the West sketchbook (Tate D26617; Turner Bequest CCLXX 92).
