This is one of the sketches of Gylen Castle that Turner made from the west: folios 63 verso–67 verso (D26865–D26873). It was either Turner’s second depiction of the castle or his penultimate sketch before he struck off from the coast to join the path to Barnabuck (see folio 62 verso; D26863). The castle is therefore seen from several hundred metres away, from the crags beneath the cliffs on the headland to the west.
See folio 73 verso (D26885) for further details about Turner’s visit to Gylen Castle.
