This sketch of a ‘rocky coast’, as Finberg simply called it,1 may show the mouth of Loch Nevis from the Sound of Sleat to the west near Arisaig. It falls between sketches of the Armadale coast made on the approach to Arisaig (folio 3 verso; D26960) and a sketch that apparently looks north-east across the mouth of Loch Nevis (folio 4 verso; D26962). It therefore fits within the sequence of sketches, and within Turner’s systematic examination of the views to the north, south, east and west of the Sound of Sleat. The mouth of the loch is bordered at the right by steep hills to the east of the port of Mallaig. To the left is the slightly lower lying southern end of the Knoydart Peninsula.
