Like all the pages in this book, the present sketch was very rapidly and roughly executed, and without any architecture, and no distinctive topography, the subject in this case is hard to determine. The general shape of the coastline and the fact that the sketch appears in the book between views of Oban Bay (folio 3; D26940) and Duart Castle (folio 4; D26943) are presumably what suggested to David Wallace-Hadrill and Janet Carolan that the view was likely to be of the ‘southern shore of the Sound of Mull’,1 sketched as Turner’s boat approached the entrance to the Sound.
