This sketch of the outline of hills was made on a sheet of off-white laid writing paper made at Carron Mill in Denny, which can be grouped with a handful of sketches of the area around Evanton in Ross. The sketch on the reverse of this page may have been made around the meeting of the Blackwater and Averon Rivers, six miles north of Evanton, making this a possibility for the current view. Several other sketches were made around Glen Glass and the Black Rock Gorge about a mile from Evanton. For references see Tate D3479 (Turner Bequest CCCXLIV d 324).
