For Egremont Castle and views from this sketchbook, mistaken for Cockermouth Castle by Finberg, see Introduction. The view here is northwards, with the River Ehen and bridge on the right and the castle on the left, with its gatehouse the most prominent feature. A similar view from the same sketchbook, from the track or road seen beside the river here, is D07532; Turner Bequest CIX 20. Both show the outer side of the gatehouse with a pointed top; today it is lower and flat. A close-up sketch in the Cockermouth sketchbook (Tate D07578; Turner Bequest CX 36) shows the inner wall as lower and flat at the top.
