The ruins of the fourteenth-century Penrith Castle are in the care of English Heritage. Turner’s view, looking north-east from the grassed-in moat (Finberg’s ‘river’) below the best-preserved corner of the castle towards the town and St Andrew’s Church, is unchanged today. Other views of the castle, taken again from further away, are on folio 10 and 11 of the sketchbook (D07548, D07549).
