For Egremont Castle and views in this sketchbook see Introduction and note to folio 26 (D07567). Here, Turner has drawn the castle’s best-preserved feature, its gatehouse, from inside the walls. Today, the outer side of the gatehouse has been somewhat reduced in height and has lost the pointed top that Turner shows in other views in this and also his Petworth sketchbook (Tate D07531 and D07532; Turner Bequest CIX 19, 20).
