Continued on folio 39 verso (D07582), for which see note. In addition to Turner’s inscription ‘Smoke like the clouds’ on 39 verso, this leaf is extensively annotated with notes on colour and effect. Below the skyline across the foreground is written, in pencil, ‘Orpiment and Blood. Blue clouds yellow edge’, and within the sky from left to right ‘Golden’, ‘Warm’, ‘Yellow’, ‘Grey’ (three times), ‘Red’, ‘Blue’, ‘Grey Rain’ and ‘light redish colord Clouds | yet watery’
