Drawn with the sketchbook inverted. Askham Hall is a fourteenth-century pele tower later converted into a residence. Turner’s view is from above the road leading down to Askham Bridge, which crosses the River Lowther; thence the road continues into the castle’s park. The Hall, with its corner turrets and crenellated roof, is seen above the garden wall at right.
