This page completes a series of very similar views of St Mary’s Loch in Selkirkshire, all made from the northern end; folios 24–28 (D26140–D26148). Most of the sketches can be identified as depicting southerly views from near Cappercleuch, although the present sketch is less certain. The rounded hills and the quick and easy sketching style, however, are consistent with these views, and it is unlikely that Turner would have gone far for one extra view. Therefore this is likely to be the last sketch Turner made of the loch from Cappercleuch before he turned back along the road. Sketches of folios 29 verso–30 verso (D26151–D26153) show him moving east along the Yarrow Valley towards Selkirk.
