One of a series of views of Edinburgh Castle in this sketchbook, this sketch was made from the south-west of the castle, probably from Castle Terrace. The large building at the top centre is New Barracks, built in 1769. Turner made the sketches on 1 October 1834, a fact that is recorded in the diary of the publisher Robert Cadell, who accompanied the artist that day.1 For references and further information, see folio 63 verso (D26218).
