This is one of several sketches of Stirling Castle from the King’s Park to the south-west (see folio 49 verso; D26352). Like the almost identical sketch on the reverse of this page (folio 50; D26353), this view includes the King’s Knot in the foreground beneath the Castle Esplanade. This sketch also includes a small group of figures in the foreground at the left. While Turner may have observed these people, they are also included as a compositional element, suggesting that the artist was searching for a composition to a potential painting. The sketch continues slightly on folio 51 (D26355) where the outline of the Church of the Holy Rude is drawn.
See folio 44 verso (D26342) for a full list of Turner’s sketches of Stirling.
