This view of Doune Castle was made from nearby to the south-east and includes in the foreground the boulder-strewn River Teith. Turner initially made the castle’s tower house too narrow so had to correct his drawing by redrawing one of the gables further to the left. Although it is a fairly sketchy drawing, Turner was obviously concerned with recording the architecture and topography accurately; every window, gun loop and turret is in its place. His thorough approach led him to make a full circuit of the castle, studying the architecture from each side and making various sketches of its setting; see folio 52 verso (D26358).
