David Wallace-Hadrill and Janet Carolan have identified the four sketches drawn down the side of this page as having been made from the mountain road that runs south from Loch Achray to Aberfoyle;1 this is the Duke’s Pass. The first sketch was made from the beginning of the pass at the southern end of Loch Achray, near the Achray Toll house. Loch Achray is at the left of the sketch, with the peak of Ben A’an above. Below is a sketch that shows mountains rising above a wide glen inscribed ‘Aberfoyle’, suggesting that the sketch was made as Turner was approaching Aberfoyle, and therefore looks south towards the town and the hills beyond. A similar view is depicted below. The fourth sketch, Wallace-Hadrill and Carolan suggest, is a view to the west.
Finally, with the sketchbook turned to the left is a sketch that Wallace-Hadrill and Carolan have identified as Loch Katrine, as seen from the south-west corner looking towards Ben A’an.2 They suggest that the sketch is inscribed ‘Str’, denoting Stronachlachar, though this may not be an inscription at all.
