This view may be northwards from the Ness headland at Shaldon, looking over the mouth of the River Teign towards Teignmouth and the Devon coast towards Dawlish to the north-east. For other views of Teignmouth see under folio 71 verso (D08499; CXXIII 68a).
Probably in preparation for his 1811 tour, Turner made the following note on Shaldon from a recent edition of John Feltham’s Guide to All the Watering and Sea-Bathing Places in the Vale of Heathfield sketchbook (Tate D10206; Turner Bequest CXXXVII 1): ‘By a ferry pass the Teign to Shaldon, which lies adjacent to a promontory called the Ness’.
