Finberg’s assumption of Turner’s meaning is probably correct, as folio 86 recto (D08525; CXXIII 83) is inscribed ‘Dart’ in full. However, this river scene appears rather generic and the cottage and landing-place on the right remain unidentified. Interspersed with identified views on the Dart, there are other likely Dart on folios 85 verso, 86 recto, 96 recto, 96 verso, 97 verso and 99 recto (D08524, D08525, D08545, D08546, D08548, D08551; CXXIII 82a, 83, 93, 93a, 94a, 96).
For views of Dartmouth, where the Dart enters the sea, see under folio 3 recto (D08366); for Totnes, at the river’s upper tidal limit, see under folio 94 verso (D08542; CXXIII 91a). There are also various Dart subjects towards the end of the contemporary Corfe to Dartmouth sketchbook (Tate; Turner Bequest CXXIV).
