Joseph Mallord William Turner Views of a Town, Possibly Falmouth 1811

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 107 Recto:
Views of a Town, Possibly Falmouth 1811
D08566
Turner Bequest CXXIII 104
Pencil on white wove writing paper, 75 x 117 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘[?L Falmouth]’ top right
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘104’ top left, ascending vertically
Stamped in black ‘CXXIII – 104’ top right, ascending vertically

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Finberg does not transcribe Turner’s inscription, but presumably read it as ‘Falmouth’, which appears questionable. If the town is shown in both studies, the views are to the north, as it descends to the shoreline to its east. For other views in and around Falmouth see under folio 7 verso (D08375).
