The tower of St Andrew’s and the spire of the Charles Church are seen from the north against the bulky silhouette of the Citadel, with Plymouth Harbour beyond. The tower at Mount Batten is indicated at the left-hand edge and Mount Edgcumbe rises in the distance on the right. The viewpoint is the Mutley district of the city, then open country but now so densely built up that an equivalent view is unobtainable. For other Plymouth views in this sketchbook and elsewhere, see under folio 3 verso (D08367).
