The drawing is unique in this sketchbook in being in ink rather than pencil; there are, however, extensive ink drafts of poetry (see the introduction). It seems likely that the sketch was made from memory while writing rather than from direct observation.
Turner recorded various warships or hulks in the waters around Plymouth, for example on folio 195 recto (D08717; CXXIII 192); for other views in the area see under folio 3 verso (D08367).
