The castle is viewed from north-west of the village square. It can still be seen from a similar angle through trees beside the Purbeck Way footpath below the castle from the corner of the square, although the relative elevations of the towers suggest that Turner was on higher ground, now private gardens further back from the path.1
There is a similar view from a little to the east on folio 17 recto (D08826), where the tilted tower in the right foreground in the present sketch consequently appears towards the left. See the entry for D08826 for Turner’s various other drawings of the castle and village.
