The view is from the beach on the east side of Lulworth Cove, Dorset, the only point inside the cove from which the Isle of Portland is visible on the horizon to the south-west, through the seaward entrance. The drawing continues a little onto on folio 21 recto opposite (D08831). Presumably because the profile of Portland is disrupted through coinciding with the gutter between the two pages, Turner repeated this part of the view on folio 20 recto (D08829).
There are further views of Lulworth Cove on folios 21 verso and 22 recto (D08832, D08833). There is also a slighter version of the present double-page view in the Vale of Heathfield sketchbook (Tate D10237; Turner Bequest CXXXVII 21), perhaps made on the same occasion.
Technical notes:
There is some brown spotting at the bottom right.
