Here Turner has climbed from the beach within Lulworth Cove to the narrow strip of level ground on its south-eastern side, looking south-west to the Isle of Portland and north-west to Hambury Tout, the steep hill in the distance on the right. At the centre is the opposite side of the entrance to the cove, masking Stair Hole, the heights beyond which provided the viewpoint for the drawing looking back this way on folio 22 recto (D08833). Both of these features appear to be noted in Turner’s inscription, although the second word is very uncertain. There is a slightly less detailed drawing of exactly the same view in the Vale of Heathfield sketchbook (Tate D10238; Turner Bequest CXXXVII 22), perhaps made on the same occasion.
