The four sketches on this page represent a series of views, possibly within the Bay of Salerno although the individual locations remain unidentified. The artist has captured the mountainous appearance of this part of the Tyrrhenian coastline. The rough, uncertain nature of the draughtsmanship suggests that they were executed from a moving carriage. Similar sketches can be seen on folios 35 verso–36 and 37 verso–38 verso (D15977–D15978 and D15981–D15983; Turner Bequest CLXXXVI 33a–34 and 35a–36a)
At the bottom of the sheet is a small part of the composition from the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 37 (D15980; Turner Bequest CLXXXVI 35).
