Turner’s expedition from Rome to Naples took him directly past the volcanic lakes of Albano and Nemi, in the countryside immediately south-east of the capital. This sketch depicts the Papal Palace at Castel Gandolfo, built on the rim of the crater above the shores of Lake Albano. Turner’s viewpoint is from the west looking towards the walls. An alternative prospect can be found on folio 3 (D15559), whilst similar vistas can also be seen in the Albano, Nemi, Rome sketchbook (Tate D15324 and D15326; Turner Bequest CLXXXII 16a and 17a).
