Turner’s southward journey from Rome to Naples took him past Lake Albano and on to Lake Nemi. This sketch represents part of a view looking across Lake Nemi from the north towards the surrounding hills. The composition continues on the opposite page of the double-page spread with Genzano and the Palazzo Sforza Cesarini on the western shore, see folio 7 (D15567). The artist has also extended the view onto part of the underlying sheet of the previous page, see folio 5 verso (D15564).
