This sketch appears to depict part of a panoramic view of the coast of Latina with the promontory of Monte Circeo on the right, and the Monti Lepini (also known as the Volscian Mountains) on the left. Turner’s viewpoint was probably a location on the Via Appia during his journey through the Pontine Marshes between Rome and Terracina. The composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 13 verso (D15580).
