The subject of this sketch is a view within the old port and harbour of Naples with the lighthouse of the Mole on the right and the small headland of Castel dell’Ovo visible in the distance beyond. The ship in the foreground lies at an unusual angle to the jetty and has perhaps being docked for repairs. A faint outline sketch of coastline with Vesuvius can also be seen in the top left-hand corner of the page. For alternative drawings of the lighthouse see folio 70 (D15672; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 58), and for a similar view of the boat beside the Mole see the Naples, Rome, Paestum sketchbook (Tate D15914; Turner Bequest CLXXXVI 4).
