The subject of this sketch is not conclusively identified but it appears to depict one of the volcanic lakes in the Campi Flegrei region (Phlegraean or Burning Fields), probably either Lake Avernus or Lake Agnano. Part of the composition spills over onto the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 79 (D15711; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 77).
